+ Korean history doesn't fly on Chinese TV screens (2007.09): SARFT puts the kibbosh on Korean historical dramas. + Religion and government in an uneasy mix (2008.03): Phoenix Weekly (凤凰周刊) article from October, 2007, on government influence on religious practice in Tibet. + David Moser on Mao impersonators (2004.10): I first became aware of this phenomenon in 1992 when I turned on a Beijing TV variety show and was jolted by the sight of "Mao Zedong" and "Zhou Enlai" playing a game of ping pong. They both gave short, rousing speeches, and then were reverently interviewed by the emcee, who thanked them profusely for taking time off from their governmental duties to appear on the show.

Comments on Olympics advice from ex-CNN journalist
Parachute journalists not only pose troubles to the interviewees by quoting things out of context, but also plant bias, ignorance, and steretypes into readers' heads. With so many journalists being of the parachute style, it's an interesting question whether journalists as a profession has done more hard or good to society at large.
That being said, I have to say that I like journalism. It's just too many journalists feel that they can be good journalists as long as they have conscience. No, you also have to have a good brain, with logic, analytical power, and knowledge about the subject matter one's reporting on.
considering how wesern journalists misinterpret almost everything they get from their chinese interviewees purposefully and use them to present a distorted image of not only chinese government but also chinese people to the world, i would ask chinese to refuse to accept interviews by western journalists, especially those from CNN, Der Spiegel, BBC, etc.
as a matter of fact, many chinese, like Wang Xiaofeng, has already learned the lesson in a hard way and started to refuse taking such interviews.
"i would ask chinese to refuse to accept interviews by western journalists, especially those from CNN, Der Spiegel, BBC, etc."---Chinese Reader (above)
That's not the way to do it. Silence solves nothing. If you don't like these organizations the best approach is that when they interview you instead of answering their questions just call them out for what you accuse them of doing. Why do you point out CNN, BBC, and Der Spiegel specifically? These three however biased they may be---due to possible business interests---are still closer to a balance than a diet you will get from domestic sources.
I for one are more scared of organizations like NBC who are heavily invested in the success of the Chinese market and their bottom line associated with that and what this means in terms of their broadcast's authenticity. There is little to no chance, since they invested hundreds of millions in this venture, that they would risk upsetting the powers that be.
"Why do you point out CNN, BBC, and Der Spiegel specifically?"
Maybe because of their biased reports from Balkan war's?
Arrogant western medias...
dragan - You don't need to go that far. All of these outlets have been fingered in China for their coverage of the "Western Incidents" in Lhasa, specifically for presenting Nepalese protester as the domestic variety and/or using cropped photographs for dramatic effect.
Where can I download the software she said that can have access to blocked sites?
"Arrogant western medias..."---Charles S.
Good one. That says absolutely nothing. You are arrogant for writing that. If you hate the western media then get a job with them and change it.
The domestic media in China is f-ing arrogant to think that people are as stupid as they claim us to be.
All you whiners and complainers with you b*thcing and moaning do nothing but cry cry cry. At least these western media are trying to get the truth out there.
What they hell have you done?

I never believe in Chinese media.
Maybe some western media are not as objective and just as they claim themselves to be, but...
I'd rather buy their stories.
Here's a great article from this Irish newspaper today that says it well...
"IT'S ALL ABOUT BEING FRIENDS, MATE
Actress Zhang Ziyi, star of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, who admits to being 'puzzled' by those nasty people who criticise her country.
Speaking in this month's Vogue magazine, the actress says: "I don't see why people are so negative. The games are about friendship. I'm Chinese and I'm proud of my country."
So, the games are about friendship?
I'm sure the tens of thousands of BJ residents who have been hauled off to receive "re-education through forced labour" would feel very friendly towards that point of view."

Sgt. that maybe true but there are millions more that feel the same way Ms. "Billionaire" Zhang does ...
