Asia Business Intelligence was one of the earliest China-focused business blogs, originally on Salon.com's blog server. It has now migrated to its own website. A recent posting asks: "Is it all that rosy for media investments?" The post includes links to a number of legal documents about foreign investment in media in China, and also a translation of a People's Daily article about 10 big trends in Chinese advertising: 1. Increased state supervision over “problem” advertising. 2. Simplification of procedures relating to increasing foreign investment. 3. Growing competition for increased customer spending among national and provincial media outlets. 4. Development of SMS (cellphone messaging) as a major business opportunity. 5. Maturity of online gaming platforms as major advertising channels. 6. “TV Anywhere” and the proliferation of advertising into all aspects of social life. 7. Multinational advertising agencies, in cooperation with local firms, to develop markets in second-tier cities. 8. Advancement of advertising into the digital television realm. 9. Growth of public relations firms as risk reduction vehicles. 10. Development of regulation should help ensure industry standardization, but the administrative wherewithal for uniform implementation may be lacking. LINKS: |

+ The top Chinese books in 2007 (2008.02): China Reading Journal (中华读书报), Yazhou Zhoukan (亚洲周刊), and City Pictorial (城市画报) choose mainland China's top books for 2007. + Men behind the Nanny (2005.04): The Publicity Department (formerly known as the Propaganda Department) has held a "forum" in Beijing to promote what it calls "news editorial staff management regulations (in testing phase)". These regulations appear to be same the set of rules earlier reported on Danwei of which the stated intent is to clear up corrupt journalistic practices. + Asimov Published, Interviewed in Beijing (2005.03): Cover story from this week's Book Review section of The Beijing News announces the publication of a Chinese translation of Isaac Asimov's complete Foundation series. Yup, the Beijing News has scored a fictional interview with "I, Asimov". They've been taking similar liberties recently in their entertainment sections, captioning photographs of celebrities with made-up quotes.
