![]() Albert Einstein once said that everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler. A couple of millennia earlier, Lao Zi taught us that those who know do not speak and those who speak do not know. We'll get back to these two in a minute. As a regular user of most of Google's services - Search, Gmail, Analytics, Finance, Reader, etc. - I am often amused by the targeted ads I am served. The ads are a testament to how well Google knows me, and provide a general idea of the assumptions Google makes regarding people my "my kind". Being a young western man in China, I normally receive ads promoting massage and escort services while reading my mail online or while searching for legitimate restaurants or government offices (as much as these are legitimate...). Such ads normally carry a standard format, stating the name of the vendor, their rates or hours of operation, and offering a link for further information. China is full of massage parlors, KTVs, "hair" salons, and various other platforms for offering sexual services. In a such competitive market, service providers that do not differentiate themselves get lost in the clutter. While checking my Gmail this morning, I came across one of the simplest and most elegant ads I have ever seen. It had three words - girl, beijing, shanghai. A click on the ad leads to a landing page with photos of beautiful Chinese girls and links to the web sites of massage and escort service providers in Beijing and Shanghai. It seems that 21st Century China, eastern simplicity and western technology come together to create surprising results. And indeed, despite the ad's spare prose, it does not take an Albert Einstein to understand what services are being offered. |

Ummm...you found out google has sex ads, congratulations?
I remember the first week I came to Beijing, I went by the Lido Holiday Inn. Walked outside and directly across the street are a few massage and hair salons. If you walk by, the ladies even come out to talk to you.
Don't do that anymore, but it's RIGHT there! If you're a foreigner in China, coming to the Holiday Inn, the first thing you see coming out is a massage parlor, fake DVDs and a sichuan restaurant.
Big fan of Home Away From Home down the street.
Wut: The style of the ad was a good opportunity to float this topic. Not everyone is familiar with the industry and its practices my friend.
amazingly enough, only half of the google ads on this page are for the aforementioned services.
my favorite is when you stay in a relatively cheap hotel and they call your room every 15 minutes or so between 9pm and 12am and then hang up immediately when they hear a female voice.
I'm pretty sure people are familar with google advertising sex...what it has to do with "eastern simplicity and western tech" seems more intriguing.

What amazes me about the Lido is that it is a Holiday Inn property. In the US, they have a family friendly brand... but at the Lido, they are clearly only interested in providing a male oriented service.
Here's a question that I've had on my sick mind for ages: you know those ads for Chinese mail-order brides? Well, why do they always show the same 5 or 6 girls? It doesn't say much for the success of their business now does it?
Several months ago, journalist reported that they saw Oliver Stone bringing TWO pretty girls to his hotel in beijing.I was just wondering that how did he get to know these girls??
Probably this is the answer.
Maybe Oliver Stone simply walked thru Dongfang Guangchang (Oriental Plaza) in the afternoon. Will take a foreigner two mins till two young chinese girls approach you... Either tea girls, bar girls or beyond. "Where are you from? We are students who want to practice their english." In the evening prostitutes will ask you openly wether you need a girl. Happens all the time on Wangfujing Rd.
I want to congratulate you on your piece. I'm an author living in the States. My book, "Secret Confessions of a High-priced Call Girl" will be available next month on Amazon.com. Obviously, it's based on my life. As a former prostitute, I'm part of a growing population here: well-bred, well-educated women who work in prostitution and are willing to expose their lives for public consumption...
Now, does anyone know if these girls by the Holiday Inn are bloggers, by any chance? I could use a blogger in China to blog excerpts of my book in the English-language sites in China...hehe
