A beauty pageant for plastic surgery babesPosted by Eric Mu, July 23, 2004 1:33 PM
Yesterday's Beijing Morning Post reported that the world's first beauty pageant specially women who have had cosmetic surgery (artificial beauties) will take place in November this year. More than 20 women have already applied to participate, including some foreigners. The competition seems to be a result of plastic babe Yang Yuan's rejection from the Miss Intercontinental competition after the organizers found out that she was 'man made'. The woman pictured in the Beijing Morning Post story above is 22-year-ol Liu Yajuan, who has already had 13 cosmetic surgical procedures including a nose job, liposuction and work on her cheeks, chin, eyebrows and various other bits. More on Yang Yuan on Danwei here, more on plastic surgery in China here. |

+ David Moser on Mao impersonators (2004.10): I first became aware of this phenomenon in 1992 when I turned on a Beijing TV variety show and was jolted by the sight of "Mao Zedong" and "Zhou Enlai" playing a game of ping pong. They both gave short, rousing speeches, and then were reverently interviewed by the emcee, who thanked them profusely for taking time off from their governmental duties to appear on the show. + Lu Jinbo: Marketing the Wang Shuo brand (2007.06): Larry Lu Jinbo (路金波) talks about how he markets books by Wang Shuo (王朔), Han Han (韩寒), and Annie Baobei (安妮宝贝). + Wang Xiaofeng: Why is SARFT so uptight? (2008.03): A translation of a Wang Xiaofeng blog post about SARFT and their ban on actress Tang Wei.
