 Spring has come to Beijing, with temperatures in the 20s Celsius (or 80s Fahrenheit) and beautiful blue skies yesterday and today. The photo above was taken not far from Beijing in Hebei yesterday. You can see the moon rising above the Great Wall just to the right of the crumbling watch tower. You can't see it from the photograph, but there are small green shoots on those mountains, and lizards, bees and other insects are out and about. |

Pallavi Aiyar's Chinese Whiskers: Pallavi Aiyar's first novel, Chinese Whiskers, a modern fable set in contemporary Beijing, will be published in January 2011. Aiyar currently lives in Brussels where she writes about Europe for the Business Standard. Below she gives permissions for an excerpt.

They both gave short, rousing speeches, and then were reverently interviewed by the emcee, who thanked them profusely for taking time off from their governmental duties to appear on the show.

JG, that's cool. Where is this place and how did you get there? Hiking?

If you click on the thumbnail in the news post, you can see a small moon to the right of the watchtower on the left of the photograph.
I still can't figure out why everyone loves the Great Wall so much. I've been to Maginot, but it's not a national tourist trap for the French as the Great Wall is for the Chinese. On the other hand, I suppose the Great Wall is a nice place to view almost-untouched nature, with a convenient wall to help you avoid getting lost.
Maybe in the long run general perceptions of the Great Wall will transition from "duuuude! The Ming dynasty spent a huge chunk of GDP to build a huuge wall across their northern frontier, which was only so-so at keeping the northern barbarians out!" to some sort of beautifully desolate nature park.
And skirts have begun to appear on the streets. Yay.
