The sounds of Beijing

Thanks to Granite Studio, here is an excellent blog for the Beijing-obsessed and the Chinese language maven: Beijing Sounds. The author uses recordings of real Beijingers and explains, in clear language, how 'Beijing dialect' works; for example see the most recent post Does the Beijing-R mean anything?

Hi Folks! I'm in favor of anything which preserves the flavor of Beijing. Most of my teachers grew up in Lao Beijing and left me with a lifelong fondness for the unique language and culture. Newspaper and magazine articles of late bewail the disappearance of the Beijing Folk Culture! Let's keep it alive...... Cordially, Ken Grey

Hi again Folks.............. Just dropped in this morning to see if anyone had responded to my invitation from late January.Sadly they had not....which state of afairs inspires me to try again!
I know that there are many returned missionaries, adventurers, business people, and former/present students who have, like myself, been infected by a love for the the speech and culture of Lao Beijing. These forums seem to me to be the perfect place to reflect on the memories of yesteryear. If just one of you out there who remembers one expression from Beijing tuhua would pick up the thread we can probably keep the ball rolling.....................................................Qing bang mang!
