Books on China
Diamond Hill by Feng Chi-shun: Feng's memoir Diamond Hill describes an era of gambling and gangsters, Suzie Wong and squatter villages, fires and food stalls, and the Kowloon Walled City and its white powder. "A time when people were poor, but life was rich," he says. The world that he grew up in no longer exists, but his book - the first ever on the Diamond Hill refugee settlement, in either Chinese or English - offers a candid picture of what life was like for most Hong Kong residents in the 1950s.
William A. Callahan's China: The Pessoptimist Nation: China: The Pessoptimist Nation shows how the heart of Chinese foreign policy is not a security dilemma, but an identity dilemma. Through a careful analysis of how Chinese people understand their new place in the world, the book charts how Chinese identity emerges through the interplay of positive and negative feelings in a dynamic that intertwines China's domestic and international politics.
The WTO ruling: a half victory at best: In August 2009, a World Trade Organization panel ruled against China's system of monopoly control over entertainment products. Was this the victory supporters hailed as the dawn of a new day for American and global entertainment companies in the China market?

Comments on China, Obama and McCain
Armitage on team McCain's China detail? Uh oh...
Obama's China list is much better than McCain's. Bob Kapp is a smart pick, as well as Lieberthal and Lampton. I'm impressed! With the permission of Obama's campaign volunteers, I would like to stand in the background wearing my Chinese silk/satin APEC jacket and retro Chairman Mao red star cap.
In recent years, Condoleeza Rice (U.S. Secretary of State) has been the subject of some very nasty racist commentary on Chinese internet chatrooms. If Obama is elected and such patterns continue, how might that figure into things?

Crazier things have happened and Mr. Obama could possibly get elected but its highly implausible. Not because of his pigmentation, but because McCain is better suited for the job.
Nonetheless, I think China has a problem with folks that don't have cadaver-white skin tones. That's an understatement. They have a problem with everyone. What's the deal with that? Simple. It's all insecurities.
Of course, I wish Miss Rice would have run for office. She would have been totally kick ass. No one better than Condi. Hopefully McCain picks her for V.P.
This is a useful essay and translation - thanks for bringing it to our attention. China didn't seem to be a big issue in the election, but certainly visits by Clinton, Geithner, and the pollution negotiators make it clear how important it is to the US. Plus the G-20 meetings....
This video series summarizes some of the issues and also includes clips from speeches Obama made on the campaign trail about China:

What do you think?
(thanks by the way for the useful url clues. Hope mine look ok.
