Books on China
Diamond Hill by Feng Chi-shun: Feng's memoir Diamond Hill describes an era of gambling and gangsters, Suzie Wong and squatter villages, fires and food stalls, and the Kowloon Walled City and its white powder. "A time when people were poor, but life was rich," he says. The world that he grew up in no longer exists, but his book - the first ever on the Diamond Hill refugee settlement, in either Chinese or English - offers a candid picture of what life was like for most Hong Kong residents in the 1950s.
William A. Callahan's China: The Pessoptimist Nation: China: The Pessoptimist Nation shows how the heart of Chinese foreign policy is not a security dilemma, but an identity dilemma. Through a careful analysis of how Chinese people understand their new place in the world, the book charts how Chinese identity emerges through the interplay of positive and negative feelings in a dynamic that intertwines China's domestic and international politics.
The WTO ruling: a half victory at best: In August 2009, a World Trade Organization panel ruled against China's system of monopoly control over entertainment products. Was this the victory supporters hailed as the dawn of a new day for American and global entertainment companies in the China market?

Comments on Nigeria and China railway deal: $8.3 billion
they had better make sure that they heed Mahathir's call and sign the contract in EURO dollars.
This is wonderful news for Nigeria and its citizens and hope this would be the begining of more improvement on the nation's infastructure which needs major investment on all fronts.
This is definitely good news. I hope China will also be interested in technology transfer. This will help in building local manpower. This is because infrastructure building without maintenance is bad.
finally some real innovative agreemant... all i hope for is that a maintenance system be put in place.
I hope the chinese will be willing to employ alot of nigerian professionals in the relevant field, both in the diaspora and locally. Especially from London where a lot of us have gained valuable experience from working on the oldest railway system.
All the better to transport Africa's minerals rapidly to China at a bargain price no doubt...
The Nigerian Governtment and its people should be cautious about the chinese, lessons should be learnt from experiences between the chinese and some European companies
If a number of African countries turn to China for contracts, they have good reasons to do so. China didn't enrol the African citizens during the two world wars and now that those African countries need Europe's contributions to develop their economies, these European countries say : "Go home ! We are experiencing our own difficulties ! Enough of you ! etc."
Firstly they should make the trains steam trains running on coal or wood, secondly nigerians should be trained to do all aspects of the railroad running, thirdly stations and depots and timetables should also be established.
