Danwei TV seeks scriptPosted by Jeremy Goldkorn on Thursday, July 27, 2006 at 6:55 PM
The video below was shot in a few hours using an amateur cast (i.e. yours truly and an indulgent taxi driver). It is the first 30 seconds of a five minute fiction movie. We are looking for a complete script based on the story set up in this clip. The ideal script does not involve too many locations, props or actors. It will be shot in Beijing, with better looking actors than you see in the video below. Please email all submissions or questions to jeremy -at- danwei.org. If you have an idea but are not interested in writing a script, please leave it in the comments. This clip was shot by Noah Weinzweig and Luke Mines and edited by the latter. Books on China
The Eurasian Face : Blacksmith Books, a publishing house in Hong Kong, is behind The Eurasian Face, a collection of photographs by Kirsteen Zimmern. Below is an excerpt from the series:
Big in China: An adapted excerpt from Big In China: My Unlikely Adventures Raising A Family, Playing The Blues and Becoming A Star in China, just published this month. Author Alan Paul tells the story of arriving in Beijing as a trailing spouse, starting a blues band, raising kids and trying to make sense of China.
Pallavi Aiyar's Chinese Whiskers: Pallavi Aiyar's first novel, Chinese Whiskers, a modern fable set in contemporary Beijing, will be published in January 2011. Aiyar currently lives in Brussels where she writes about Europe for the Business Standard. Below she gives permissions for an excerpt.

+ Korean history doesn't fly on Chinese TV screens (2007.09): SARFT puts the kibbosh on Korean historical dramas. + Religion and government in an uneasy mix (2008.03): Phoenix Weekly (凤凰周刊) article from October, 2007, on government influence on religious practice in Tibet. + David Moser on Mao impersonators (2004.10): I first became aware of this phenomenon in 1992 when I turned on a Beijing TV variety show and was jolted by the sight of "Mao Zedong" and "Zhou Enlai" playing a game of ping pong. They both gave short, rousing speeches, and then were reverently interviewed by the emcee, who thanked them profusely for taking time off from their governmental duties to appear on the show.

Comments on Danwei TV seeks script
Sorry, don't have the time to write a feature-length film script, but...you could always beat Hollywood to the punch!
http://anonymouse.org/cgi-bin/anon-www.cgi/http://chinaconfidential.blogspot.com/2006/05/da-vinci-code-meets-china-meets.html
"Not too surprisingly, one of the characters in the screenplay is a former US Secretary of State with close ties to the powers- that-be in Beijing. He is also the mentor of the hero of the story--an Ivy League political science professor and China expert who bears a striking resemblance to real-life movie star, human rights activist and Tibet freedom advocate Richard Gere. According to the screenplay, we are told, the professor stumbles across the conspiracy and the crucial role that his intellectual idol plays in it in the course of ... you guessed it ... blogging ... about China!"
One good starting point for a feature, but why dont we see the cell phone on the taxi seat when Jeremy gets off?
I see this emerging as a tragic love story - one man tragically seperated from society as the taxi moves off into the distance carrying within it his only link to the outside world....his phone.
Perhaps he will go on a journey of self discover - learning how to cope without a phone/blackberry/laptop and through this spiritual enlightenment will find true happiness.
When at the end the phone is returned to him he will realise that it is not his only friend/link but is merely something to call people with.
The end
Did I mention spirtual enlightenment could be accompanied with a very beautifully filmed trip to some Beijing landmarks like the Temple of Heaven or a tour through the Hutongs to find some great guru guy
Oh, just five minutes..?
I read somewhere about some documentary maker in Beijing who's just recently shown up back on the scene, maybe you could see what ideas he has.
DEATH IN BEIJING: A LOVE STORY
Proposed Script Treatment
by I. Bergman
Scene One: We see THE MAN. He is running. Why is he running? He has left his personal digital assistant in the back seat of a taxicab. It begins to snow. THE MAN weeps.
Scene Two: We see THE MAN at home with his family. But his family does not see him. He is invisible to them. He turns towards his wife, ILSA. ILSA says something to a BOY. The BOY passes a plate of jellied fish towards ILSA, looking past THE MAN. THE MAN weeps. Outside the night is cold, and the windows frosted. A single snowflake falling past the window, reprsenting isolation.
Scene three: THE MAN is walking down the same alleyway, overcoat wrapped tightly against the cold. He sees the taxicab. In his face we can see surprise and shock, and a small glimmer of hope. He approaches the taxicab and peers into the window. We see THE MAN gasp. He is terrified, but cannot look away. Slowly the camera pans towards the window of the taxicab. Inside is DEATH. DEATH is the taxicab driver. In DEATH's skeletal hands is the mans Personal Digital Assistant. DEATH is playing solitiare on the device. Slowly DEATH rolls down the window of the taxicab.
"This belongs to you."
DEATH tells THE MAN.
Camera pans back towards THE MAN. We see a flash of understanding cross his face. He takes the Personal Digital Assistant from DEATH's hands. Having retrieved the device, THE MAN walks slowly down the alleyway, followed closely by the taxicab. Followed closely by DEATH. A single nightengale sits on a leafless tree-branch, whistling mournfully as the camera pans slowly out over the city.

PS - I will require a retainer of 2.5 million Euros to continue with the development of this story. Please contact me if you are interested.
*spits coffee over keyboard*
that bergman guy... he may be on to something...
What about that script with the evil clown and the supermodels?
JZM used it for his new book.
as iggy continues to sing, j. pulls out a fake brown leather pouch, unzips it, and to his horror finds that the bag of white powder nestled next to his dirty syringe is empty. he curses the garbageman with a scottish accent and hurriedly makes his way to the bus bar so he can replenish his contacts list (via infrared) on his new crackberry.
