Cory Doctorow at the Beijing Bookworm tonight

Tonight at 7:30pm at the Beijing Bookworm: a speech by science-ficiton writer and Boing Boing co-editor Cory Doctorow.

Doctorow has published three science fiction novels which he also gives away for free as Internet downloads (see his website Craphound to get the books). He is also an activist who argues against digital rights management and other technologies that restrict sharing of digital media and information, and says that free downloads of his books have done nothing but increase sales of the print copies which are published and distributed conventionally.

Aside from fans of Doctorow's fiction and Boing Boing groupies, this evening's event should be of interest to anyone involved in media and copyright issues in China where the media and publishing industries are in sore need of new business models that deal realistically with digital realities.

Your correspondent will be introducing Doctorow at the event.

Which makes this an advertisement, not a piece of news.

Did Danwei t.v film this? Anyone film this? Sounds interesting.

I'm sorry SinaSource but this is NEWS to me...

The Bookworm is dead to me.

I was sitting in the back row, and couldn't hear a word Cory said. The reasons were a combination of poor (nonexistant?) amplification, and loud cafe music blaring through the doorway.

Sorry, Bookworm, but you just lost a customer for life.

On a related note, does Beijing have fire codes? Because I'm pretty sure that putting 100 people into the Bookworm's back room with exactly one exit breaks them if they do exist....
