China Clipper seaplanesPosted by Jeremy Goldkorn, March 3, 2008 4:56 PM
'10,000 miles across the Pacific lies rich China, whose enormous trade possibilities have scarcely been scratched by U.S. businessmen', begins this 1930s news reel about Pan Am's China Clipper service. The first China Clipper left San Francisco bound for Manila on November 22, 1935, containing more than 110,000 letters — the first cargo of trans-Pacific airmail. There more about the China Clippers and the lost romance of travel in the 1930s on Wikipedia and The Flying Clippers page.

Comments on China Clipper seaplanesWow Jeremy!! You do dig up the coolest stuff. My great uncle before he passed told me about flying with Hemingway on that flight to China (they swam against each other in High School in Chicago). Very cool!! |
