Books on China
Diamond Hill by Feng Chi-shun: Feng's memoir Diamond Hill describes an era of gambling and gangsters, Suzie Wong and squatter villages, fires and food stalls, and the Kowloon Walled City and its white powder. "A time when people were poor, but life was rich," he says. The world that he grew up in no longer exists, but his book - the first ever on the Diamond Hill refugee settlement, in either Chinese or English - offers a candid picture of what life was like for most Hong Kong residents in the 1950s.
William A. Callahan's China: The Pessoptimist Nation: China: The Pessoptimist Nation shows how the heart of Chinese foreign policy is not a security dilemma, but an identity dilemma. Through a careful analysis of how Chinese people understand their new place in the world, the book charts how Chinese identity emerges through the interplay of positive and negative feelings in a dynamic that intertwines China's domestic and international politics.
The WTO ruling: a half victory at best: In August 2009, a World Trade Organization panel ruled against China's system of monopoly control over entertainment products. Was this the victory supporters hailed as the dawn of a new day for American and global entertainment companies in the China market?

Comments on Food safety in Beijing
This piece shows very clearly that, in fact, most of Chinese consumers don't care about food security that much. If they have to choose between price or food security, they choose price. It reflect perfectly the 'culture' they are now exporting: 'cheap' above quality.
Thanks for this, a nice little film. Life flavour.
where is Su Fei ?
Su Fei is at Sexy Beijing TV
I like the style of this film, it's about really ordinary people but it treats them sensitively, and gives a good Beijing flavor.
Well, when I bought hot dogs at the Time Square in NYC, I was excited and didn't care about food safety. Same feeling is probably true for those who bought food at Wang Fu Jing in Beijing. Now if you ask me in front of a camera how I would score the cleanness of those hot dogs I swallowed, I would give 2 out of 5 maybe. Now it starts to make me feel bad... BTW, from the video, it seems the food court in WFJ is at least organized, not like those random carts in dirty Broadway. Anyway, don't ask for too much, and thanks for the well made film.
sure, you train the camera on them vendors and they're going to say that their product is unclean and unsanitary?
and what about those pensioners? of course they'll rationalize to themselves that it's all the same as they've got no other sources of income.
and at wangfujing? where nearly all foreign tourists make pit stops and it's a question of face? do they really dare to have unsanitary food?
while it's true that most chinese rarely pay attention to some of the street foods, they're pretty concerned about food safety just like everbody else. this videocamera in their face approach is not the way to find out though.

If "they" have to choose between price or food security, "they" choose price
Who are they, how could you know they are going to choose price?!
Piece of Sh*t, "reflect perfectly the 'culture', could you say all the food service in your city have no safty problem? COULD YOU?!
Do not try to conclude others by that simple!
I found this a very nice little video-but as an investigative film, this perhaps doesn't go very deep. One thing I thought the film captured nicely is that Beijinger's really do think you can clean any vegetable by soaking it long enough.
I am reminded of my hometay parent, manager of a campus cafeteria, warning me never to eat at the cheap noodle shops because they use the neck-fat of the pork (full of toxins) and pre-used oil that other restaurants have thrown out. He was expounding on the cancer-causing effects of pesticides-while smoking a cigarette, mind you.
sometimes if you used to the flavor, you just cant resist the smell and then you grab the food and eat...
after that, you go to the bathroom, lol.
there have a word in the video: "I don't think it is clean, but what ever, I eat and I don't get sick". Most people have this thought, anyway, you will never make sure the thing you eat is clean and safe. I think you if want totally safe and clean, the only way is eat at home, do by yourself, only eat vegetable. even in air has virus.
nice camera work and style. nice editing and music in the supermarket. audio dissolves? story?
i am going to make a video about spitting on the sidewalk.
oh, a good window for us to know what's the foreingers' interest about morden china.
but i wonder what's the differences between danwei.org and sexybeing.tv?
Shuwen: Danwei.org and Sexybeijing.tv are now separate organizations with lots of cooperation.
