The theme song from Ye Meigui still rocks on classic radio (just like her Carmen, not Spelunker's version.) Ge Lan was the Gong Li of her day, playing freespirited women - sometimes tart with the golden heart - when suffering saints and demure damsels were still the offer.
Her other ouevre was Star, Moon & Sun, abt 3 women in the auxilliary forces of the Resisting Japan War. To my lao ma, those roles epitomised the sacrifice of women in the epic struggle to save China. Both movies were by Cathay Organisation, owned by the Malayan magnate Loke Wan Tho.
The SMSun title is said to riff on the trinity of the republican flag: qing tian, bai yun, man di hong - bright skies, white cloud, bountiful land.
