Comments on He Yong in 1994
a dude in hot-pants?
Not just that dude - the other dude (He Yong 何勇) gives one nostalgia for Chinese rock n roll from the '90s. Can't think of a good replacement since. Shame he's gotten old and slightly chub since then (and rumored, crazy) - see Modern Sky festival yesterday, closing act on the main stage.
自己是最大的垃圾
Why does Chinese music suck so bad nowadays? Capitalism really destroys everything authentic.
Sebastian, I agree! Sometimes when I watch bands play at the popular music venues these days, some of the more commercial acts really hit home the fact that He Yong and 魔岩三杰 (HY was part of a collective of three - with Dou Wei and Zhang Chu. The latter also played at M Sky) are a different generation altogether. Personally I prefer the 三杰. Hang On The Box rumoured to have been given English lyrics to sing, because they didn't actually speak English. The fact that so many bands sing in English now, as they (seemingly) rip off The Libertines, really isn't inspiring!
张靓颖 is so much better than 何洁.
You should try his ZhongGuLou(钟鼓楼),nostalgia of slow pace of ordinary Beijing natives. Sadly everything has gone. I ask a native Beijing girl who has pronounced local accent about HeYong. She knows nothing but she is a big fan of Coldplay and such western R&R bands, which lets me feel HeYong and their fellows are uprooted.
Dou Wei, He Yong and Zhang Chu were great. Hang on The Box and that they were given English lyrics to sing is gibberish.
There are still good/relevant bands singing in Chinese: New Pants, Carsick Cars and P.K.14 are some...
Douban and Neocha are crammed full of interesting contemporary Chinese bands and artists. Eat your own ears : )
