i agree: 1997 was definitely a great year for anglo-american "indie" rock.

by contrast, several years ago i saw an exhibition of ancient chinese wooden sculpture (mostly deities and such) on display in shanghai.

an explanatory placard near the close of the collection read something like:

Craftsmanship and artistry continued their decline in the later years of the Liao Dynasty and onwards through the Southern Song. Nothing of significance was produced between 1120 and 1310 A.D.
