Comments on 40 million new poorHmmm... this all "Dalai clique" thing starts sounding a bit like Bush talking about terror and Al-Qaida. Only a bit like Bush? is there any more detail on the rationale behind the increase in the government's classification of poverty? the change marks an increase of roughly 21%. poverty thresholds are frequently rendered in terms of 1 USD (PPP) per day. an increase of 21% over the prior threshold is largely in keeping with the RMB's recent appreciation against the dollar, but doesn't even begin to account for either inflation or inflation-adjusted increases in the commodity prices. |
