Front Page of the Day

Punishment in cardboard baozi case

Front Page of the Day is a daily review of the news on the front page of one Chinese newspaper, selected from a newsstand in Beijing's central business district.

Beijing Times, August 13, 2007
Zi Beijia, the freelance journalist behind the fake cardboard baozi scandal, has been sentenced to one year in prison and a 1,000 yuan fine. He was found to have damaged the reputation of a product or business; Beijing's No. 2 Intermediate Court announced its decision yesterday. Many papers, including today's Beijing Times, ran this story as a front-page headline. Zi has not said whether he will appeal the judgment.

The cover photo shows Beijing citizens visiting one of Jingkelong Supermarket's meat facilities. This food safety tour was conducted by the Chongwen District branch of the bureau of industry and commerce. Citizens in Chongwen can register to view the logistics procedures of several different supermarkets.

Other headlines mention that three radio stations and one TV station in Jiangsu and Anhui violated broadcast regulations, the People's Bank has "no plan" to sell off greenbacks, and two Korean hostages in Afghanistan will not be freed as previously rumored.
