First snowfall of 2008 for NanjingPosted by Banyue on Monday, January 14, 2008 at 5:43 PM
The front photo of today's Yangtse Evening Post shows a girl playing in the snow in Nanjing. Yesterday, most of Jiangsu Province met with its first snowfall of the winter. The article predicts that wet, snowy weather will continue for another two days. The paper's top headline announces that provincial government will provide subsidies to low-income residents in an attempt to reduce the effects of rising prices. More than one million people across the province will qualify. Other headlines: • Five cities in Jiangsu Province elected new local government leaders and People's Congress representatives; • Former CCTV host Huang Jianxiang left Phoenix TV for Hunan TV. His new contract is worth more than a million yuan, says the article; • Al Qaeda was almost successful in assassinating the Queen of England when she visited Uganda last November. |

+ Korean history doesn't fly on Chinese TV screens (2007.09): SARFT puts the kibbosh on Korean historical dramas. + Religion and government in an uneasy mix (2008.03): Phoenix Weekly (凤凰周刊) article from October, 2007, on government influence on religious practice in Tibet. + David Moser on Mao impersonators (2004.10): I first became aware of this phenomenon in 1992 when I turned on a Beijing TV variety show and was jolted by the sight of "Mao Zedong" and "Zhou Enlai" playing a game of ping pong. They both gave short, rousing speeches, and then were reverently interviewed by the emcee, who thanked them profusely for taking time off from their governmental duties to appear on the show.
