Iraq rocks Asia

Front Page of the Day is a daily review of the news on the front page of one Chinese newspaper, selected from a newsstand in Beijing's central business district.

Titan Weekly, July 30,2007

Titan Weekly is China's leading sports newspaper. It is published every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Today's headline announces Iraq's first Asian Cup championship, which it won by beating three-time champion Saudi Arabia 1-0 in Sunday's final in Indonesia.

The front page photo shows the scorer, Captain Younis Mahmoud, celebrating his goal.

A Titan reporter interviewed Iraq's coach, Jorvan Vieira. He said: "I would like to go to China to continue my career. If the Chinese Football Association agrees, we could sign a contract tomorrow."

Comments on Iraq rocks Asia

I am pretty certain that the coach of the Iraqi team never said that.

It is typical of Chinese journalists to create some link to China when an event-especially a sports event--threatens to overshadow China. Since the national team got trounced and bounced in the tourney, there has to be some face-saving somewhere. This is it.

having perused some of the online newspapers, I have seen vieira linked with the national teams of south korea, australia and now china. And I have only just begun.

If it were a game between the IRAQI National Soccer Team and the greatest team ever in the NFL: The PITTSBURGH STEELERS and they played some sort of hybrid game**** I guaranF-INGtee that IRON CITY (or as we say in Pittsburgh-Hua "ARN CITY") would bring home the cup. Then Jorvan Vieira would claim he was separated at birth from the Rooneys.

**** (double advantage, not only does a match like this promote international relations through competitive sports, the use of hybrids like FOOTCER of SOCBALL would make environmentalists happy)

+ David Moser on Mao impersonators (2004.10): I first became aware of this phenomenon in 1992 when I turned on a Beijing TV variety show and was jolted by the sight of "Mao Zedong" and "Zhou Enlai" playing a game of ping pong. They both gave short, rousing speeches, and then were reverently interviewed by the emcee, who thanked them profusely for taking time off from their governmental duties to appear on the show.
+ Lu Jinbo: Marketing the Wang Shuo brand (2007.06): Larry Lu Jinbo (路金波) talks about how he markets books by Wang Shuo (王朔), Han Han (韩寒), and Annie Baobei (安妮宝贝).
+ Wang Xiaofeng: Why is SARFT so uptight? (2008.03): A translation of a Wang Xiaofeng blog post about SARFT and their ban on actress Tang Wei.
