Front Page of the Day
Jiang Wen's new film goes to VenicePosted by Banyue, August 24, 2007 4:18 PM
Front Page of the Day is a daily review of the news on the front page of one Chinese newspaper. Today's paper was found at a newsstand in Beijing's central business district. As previously reported on Danwei, the Beijing Daily Messenger has transformed into an entertainment paper. All five front-page photos today are about entertainment industry figures.Today's front page picture shows leading Chinese actor and director Jiang Wen eating cake at a reception before his departure to the 64th Venice International Film Festival, which opens on August 29. Jiang will show his third film, The Sun Also Rises at the festival. His two earlier directoral efforts have a good reputation at home and abroad, although they haven't been screened legally on the mainland. The first picture on the left announces that Shrek 3 will come to the big screen tonight, without cuts or Chinese dubbing. The top headlines in today's Beijing Youth Daily concern a purchase tax hike on automobiles and the new record high for the Shanghai stock market. In contrast, the Beijing Daily Messenger puts these hard news items below Jiang Wen's picture, inside a small tab labeled "tips for daily life." |

Comments on Jiang Wen's new film goes to Venice
Not to jump the gun, but maybe the Wang Jianshuo post in the link-list on the front page should be changed to "Self-Censorship in China: a complete guidebook"? Hmmm...
Micah: Looks like a settled issue now that he's taken it down...
Hence the reference to self-censorship. In any case, the entry was mirrored in full on the SH Magazine aggregator, for the curious:
