Beijing Times

The front page of today's Beijing Times features a photo of firefighters battling a blaze in Beijing's Shunyi District. Last night, a tanker truck plowed into a container truck, leading to several explosions and a mammoth fire that burned for nearly two hours before it was put out.

In other news, the Chinese government will temporarily intervene to stabilize recent market prices. Yesterday's State Council meeting, hosted by Premier Wen Jiabao, emphasized the importance of price management and stated that the goverment will hold down the price of necessities. Today's Beijing Times used this news item for its top headline: "For the near future, the price of petrol, natural gas, and electricity will not be adjusted."

Other headlines:

  • A Beijing Taxation Bureau official announced yesterday on that the scratch-off prize rate on receipts would double this year, to 6%;
  • Zhou Liangluo, former head of Haidian District, is facing prosecution at Beijing's No. 2 Intermediate Count on suspicion of accepting bribes in the amount of 16 million yuan;
  • China's first gold futures market opened at the Shanghai Futures Exchange yesterday. The price of gold price rose 6.34% on the first day.

hey, dont no whether u have mentioned this or not, in china, we are not allowed to use plastic bags from June, 1st, 2008. and nowadays ppl started to talk about this, maybe u can make a video clip concerning this and check out what ppl really want and expect or whether they are willing to accept this change.

:)

@ weiwei

I do not think that we are not "allowed" to use plastic bags as you said. As far as I know, we need to pay one mao(10cents) for each PB and it is said the money would go to a foundation that supports enviromental projects.

They both gave short, rousing speeches, and then were reverently interviewed by the emcee, who thanked them profusely for taking time off from their governmental duties to appear on the show.
