The First, November 2, 2007

The First, which has adopted a substantially more attractive front-page layout since Danwei last had a look, announces today that the street lamps on Beijing's Second Ring Road are to be replaced. The new lamps, standing 13 meters tall, will be twice as bright as the current ones and will be installed by December 25 this year.

The main front page picture shows Olympic gold medalist Zhao Ruirui with designer Ma Yanli. The volleyball star, together with coach Cheng Zhonghe and distance runner Wang Junxia, will take Ma's new selection to the catwalk next month.

Other headlines and pictures:

Dou Wei's arson trial concluded yesterday with the court finding him guilty of malicious destruction of property. However, his voluntary surrender and offer of compensation means that he faces no further punishment.

Elisabeth Loisel, new coach of the China Women's Soccer Team, arrived in Wuhan yesterday. Her first action will be to organize the team's training.
