Food safety and the coal mine accidentPosted by Banyue, August 1, 2007 4:15 PM
Front Page of the Day is a daily review of the news on the front page of one Chinese newspaper, selected from a newsstand in Beijing's central business district. In response to the many food safety scandals of late, the Beijing Food Safety Committee announced regulations yesterday which state that the food safety watchdog will determine the local government's responsibility for unsafe food. The Beijing News used this story for its top headline today.A second headline concerns Beijing's traffic plan. The Municipal Transportation Committee (aka Beijing Municipal Committee of Communications) has decided to extend Changan Avenue west out to Mentougou, meaning that the West 6th Ring Road would be linked to the 2nd Ring Road. However, the construction schedule has not yet been determined. The front page photo shows milk being transported to a flooded coal mine in Shangxian, Henan Province. Sixty-nine workers are trapped there, with milk sent through a tube their only lifeline. But they aren't in life-threatening danger, and if the rescue effort goes well, they will be saved today. Update: Shanghai Daily reports that they have been saved.
