The makeup of the Politburo was announced yesterday, and the nine-member Politburo Standing Committee was introduced to the foreign and domestic press. This news made the front page of every page in the nation. Shenyang Evening News elected to run individual headshots of the Nine alongside a Xinhua photo of them standing together at the press conference (this layout happens to be identical to that chosen by today's Shenyang Daily). The box on the upper right contains a teaser for a report on the press conference. The main headline announces, "New central leadership line-up unveiled," and the subheads list off the names of the leaders of various party organs; details are provided in the article on the lower left. And that's it for today's front page. The only other item of note here is the ® next to the paper's nameplate. Shenyang Evening News—accept no substitutes.

Comments on The Politburo meets the pressI was reading some of that policy wonk stuff that included speculations based on someone arriving on stage half a pace before someone else as to their likely future prospects. Farcical that we're still engaged in this kind of Kremlinology in this day and age. |

+ Men behind the Nanny (2005.04): The Publicity Department (formerly known as the Propaganda Department) has held a "forum" in Beijing to promote what it calls "news editorial staff management regulations (in testing phase)". These regulations appear to be same the set of rules earlier reported on Danwei of which the stated intent is to clear up corrupt journalistic practices. + China's 50 Most Beautiful People (2005.03): The Beijing News borrows a picture of Maggie Cheung from Cosmo for the cover of today's Entertainment insert, "50 Most Beautiful People in China".
