Tian Liang leaves diving to act on TV

The top headline and front page photo on today's Beijing Daily Messenger are about Tian Liang, a former world diving champion who was kicked off the national team for taking on too many commercial endorsements. He will appear with actress An Yixuan in a new series adapted from the Chinese folk tale "The Cowherd and the Weaver Girl" (a retelling of the romantic story is here). Tian will play the cowherd (Niu Lang).

The second headline, beneath front page photo, announces that count-down traffic lights will be installed across downtown Beijing.

The photos and headlines on the left include:
• Actors of China's first long-form TV series, an adaptation of Lao She's "Four Generations Under One Roof" (shot in 1983), reunited in Beijing yesterday;
• Chinese rock star Zheng Jun wrote about his heart disease in his blog (link);
• Brazil knocked out America 4:0 in the Women's World Cup. They will meet Germany in final match on September 30.
