Xiangfan city changes its name to Xiangyang

Xiangyang Daily, December 10, 2010

The city of Xiangfan (襄樊) in Hubei province has been renamed Xiangyang (襄阳) - the change is official in today's Xiangyang Daily rather than yesterday Xiangfan Daily. The paper reports yesterday's events, which include the taking down of the old Xiangfan People's Government sign and adding the new Xiangyang sign (main picture). They received approval for the change on December 2.

Reports tell the masses not to celebrate the change of name, and to treat it with austerity.

What's the reason for the change?

Is a reason given for the change? Or for that matter a reason to not celebrate it? That last part is a bit odd.

"Reports tell the masses not to celebrate the change of name"

Just pretend it was always like that, and get back to work? Hehe... Serious face!

Nope, no reason was given for the change in the article I quoted. I liked the spartan phrase on the front page of the Daily concerning that there was 'nothing to celebrate.'

What's the reason for the change?
GDP grow (many new things with city name and sign need to be produced), as usual (nothing special to celebrate)

It's a long story. Xiangfan used to be two cities, the ancient Xiangyang and Fancheng. The CCP changed the names to "Xiang" "Fan". In the Chinese history, Xiang Yang is much more known than Xiangfan. Zhuge Kongming (诸葛亮), the character in the three kingdoms stayed in Longzhong (隆中)in Xiang Yang. If you read the popular novels of Jin Yong (金庸),there is a scenario where the protagonists protect the city of Xiangyang in Ancient history. That said, the city and some Chinese think that the city (and some other cities in similar situation) should use its original name as in ancient times. So this motivates the city to change its name.
