Zang Tianshuo has been arrested, police confirmed today. The pop star is suspected to be behind several gang-related crimes that caused at least one fatality, The Beijing News reports.

Zang is one of China's rock music pioneers and was once a keyboardist for Cui Jian, the "godfather of Chinese Rock music." Zang's song Friends is a karaoke standard and was featured in Feng Xiaogang's comedy Big Shot's Funeral, which starred Donald Sutherland.

The article says that that Zang has been in police custody since August, but his case was kept confidential until being brought to the media recently. Zang's assistant confirmed the arrest.

Though the report is sketchy, it does link Zang's arrest to a gang fight in 2003 in Langfang, Hebei Province, where Zang owns a bar. A man was killed during the fight.

According to a lawyer quoted in the newspaper, Zang could face three years or higher if he is found guilty.

what does donald sutherland have to do with this news ? strange.

And Jackie Chan, crooked as a dog's hind leg, roams free.

I saw Zang Tianshuo live in Nanjing in 2007. The crowd badgered him to play "Friends." After holding them off with a few songs, he caved after about half an hour. Once the climax of the show was over, the crowd thinned out.

Tales of Old Hong Kong: The new Tales of Old Hong Kong compiled by Derek Sandhaus is available at Earnshaw Books.
Diamond Hill by Feng Chi-shun: Feng's memoir Diamond Hill describes an era of gambling and gangsters, Suzie Wong and squatter villages, fires and food stalls, and the Kowloon Walled City and its white powder. "A time when people were poor, but life was rich," he says. The world that he grew up in no longer exists, but his book - the first ever on the Diamond Hill refugee settlement, in either Chinese or English - offers a candid picture of what life was like for most Hong Kong residents in the 1950s.
William A. Callahan's China: The Pessoptimist Nation: China: The Pessoptimist Nation shows how the heart of Chinese foreign policy is not a security dilemma, but an identity dilemma. Through a careful analysis of how Chinese people understand their new place in the world, the book charts how Chinese identity emerges through the interplay of positive and negative feelings in a dynamic that intertwines China's domestic and international politics.
