Earthquake relief: Donate via SMS?Posted by Adam J. Schokora, May 14, 2008 5:05 PM
Your correspondent has just received the below SMS (translation): "Send the number "1" or the number "2" to 1069999301 to donate 1 or 2 RMB, respectively, to the Chinese Red Cross earthquake relief effort fund." I have not confirmed that this as a legitimate donation method. Lively debate about it can be found here (in Chinese) with opinions going both ways. If anyone has the official word on this, please share. |

Books on China
Diamond Hill by Feng Chi-shun: Feng's memoir Diamond Hill describes an era of gambling and gangsters, Suzie Wong and squatter villages, fires and food stalls, and the Kowloon Walled City and its white powder. "A time when people were poor, but life was rich," he says. The world that he grew up in no longer exists, but his book - the first ever on the Diamond Hill refugee settlement, in either Chinese or English - offers a candid picture of what life was like for most Hong Kong residents in the 1950s.
William A. Callahan's China: The Pessoptimist Nation: China: The Pessoptimist Nation shows how the heart of Chinese foreign policy is not a security dilemma, but an identity dilemma. Through a careful analysis of how Chinese people understand their new place in the world, the book charts how Chinese identity emerges through the interplay of positive and negative feelings in a dynamic that intertwines China's domestic and international politics.
The WTO ruling: a half victory at best: In August 2009, a World Trade Organization panel ruled against China's system of monopoly control over entertainment products. Was this the victory supporters hailed as the dawn of a new day for American and global entertainment companies in the China market?

speaking about donations -it's interesting to note that China media (im mainly talking about xinhua net) has not reported on any of the countries which have offered to help -including Australia, US etc. I checked our local newspaper and it reported to us that China has declined international help at this point of time.
Just search 1069999301 on gov.baidu.com, you will find reliable posts:

maybe you didn't look very hard.
xinhua also reported on china asking for satellite photos, and that, amongst others, japan has already responded.
anon,
You are wrong. It is covered on xinhua. The call with Bush was prominently displayed. There are even videos. There are also press briefs from the foreign ministry saying they can accept money or material but not personnel help at this moment due to transportation difficulties. I am disappointed that they didn't take personnel help. Even if big equipment can't be shipped in on short notice, more sniffer dogs, portable equipments, rescue and medical experts etc couldn't hurt.
it came from 10086, the number I get all my China Mobile updates from. Here's the full message:
中国移动和中国红十字会开通短信捐款平台为地震灾区捐款,发送1或2至1069999301即可捐款1或2元,中国移动也将本次短信通信费捐款灾区。地震突袭,难关共赴,危难时刻倍感生命珍贵,亲情无价,天论身处何地,一定给您的家人和朋友报声平安。
