Mozilla coming to China, seeking talent

Last night your correspondent went to a party in Beijing hosted by Mozilla, the California-based non profit organization whose mission is to improve "the Internet experience for people everywhere". All Mozilla products, including the flagship Firefox browser, are available for free in 35 languages. The idea is to make sure that all Internet users have access to free, open-source software especially Web browsers and email applications. The party brought together heavyweights from Mozilla's U.S. offices and a crowd of Chinese Internet entrepreneurs and tech-heads, many of whom seemed very keen on the Mozilla project.

Mozilla is planning a push into China. The Chinese government has been enthusiastic about open source software systems such as Linux, and it seems likely that the Chinese market will be receptive to a greater adoption of Firefox, where currently IE is the default browser. As was pointed out in the comments to a recent Danwei post about Apple computers (Sod the iPhone), many Chinese websites are designed to work properly only with Microsoft's IE browser, meaning that they do not display properly on Firefox, Safari, Opera and other web browsers. A beneficial effect of greater use of Firefox in China would be that Chinese web designers would be forced to code their sites to comply with cross platform standards.

If you are interested in Mozilla, they are recruiting talent for their China operation which will be based in Beijing. Write to info@danwei.org; your email will be forwarded to Mozilla's Asian Business Development unit.

"Chinese web designers would be forced to code their sites to comply with cross platform standards."

At last! Using Firefox, and worse a Mac, is really a pain in the a** with Chinese sites... I complained several times to Chinese contacts about their site, where important information was unreadable, and usually they didn't even understand what I was talking about... I had to bring my laptop to show them the problem...

I never have these problems in Europe or North America.

Well don't forget about Maxthon the Chinese homegrown browser based on IE. It has a far higher adoption rate in China than Firefox and chances are that's not going to change anytime soon.

Now is this an article or an advertisement?

The fact that they are listed in the same space blurs a line which some of us expect your site to maintain.

Chris was right~
Firefox will have more problems in Chine~

Curious Clarkson: Mozilla has not paid any money to me or to Danwei. I like their product and know that they are looking for people in China and have tried to help them find some.

Well, I havn't seen linux or any other open source here in China beyond my own laptop. If they want to get young people to use Firefox, then their first target should be QQ's website.

I like your site and appreciate the effort you put into it. If you can indeed figure out a way to monetize your work to help you keep it going and make you live comfortably, then I applaud that.
