Sex-selective abortions to be a crime

The China Daily reports that sex-selective abortions are to be criminalized. According to Zhang Weiqing, minister in charge of the National Population and Family Planning Commission, "the government takes it as an urgent task to correct the gender imbalance of newborns".

Sex-selective abortion is already banned, but the move will make it a criminal offence. However, no punishment has yet been set for the crime.
