WWN Claims Another Victim

"American official reveals that Bush is considering selling Hawaii to Japan" reads the headline on Sina.com. The article, originally published in the Times Business Daily 《时代商报》, is currently the top International thread on Sina's BBS. The article quotes "foreign media" speculations on this latest plan to finance the war on terror.

The foreign media in question turns out to be the Weekly World News, source of other gems of journalism translated verbatim and run without attribution in the Chinese media. Danwei previously pointed to Xinhua's "Sexy American teachers make students concentrate".

BBS commenters were not fooled, and seem divided as to whether this was ignorance on the part of the editor, or a brazen ploy for readership.
