Job Description

AmCham Shanghai is seeking an Associate Editor to join the Communications and Publications team. The Communications team is responsible for the corporate communications and public affairs activities of the Chamber including: media relations, issues management, production of a suite of corporate publications, preparation of research reports and briefing materials, overall Chamber communications and publicity and management of the AmCham Shanghai website.

The Chamber’s high quality publishing program, including the flagship magazine, Insight and the annual White Paper on American Business in China, is major part of the external communications function with members, key stakeholders and the public. This position works with the Editor in Chief to manage the editorial and copy workflow, design and production processes across the publishing program, encompassing both print and electronic media.

Duties:

  1. Assist with management of the research, writing, editing, design and publication of various texts for the Chamber: the annual White Paper on American Business in China, the China Manufacturing Competitiveness study, the China Business Report, and other policy papers and research reports.
  2. Write news briefs and feature articles for Insight magazine.
  3. Assist with planning, editing and proofreading of content for Insight magazine.
  4. Develop story ideas, content initiatives, reader interactions and publication concepts.
  5. Assist with maintaining quality standards for writing, editorial, design and publishing services.
  6. In consultation the Editor in Chief, develop design briefs for publications.
  7. Assist with managing preparation of publicity material for publications and marketing activities.
  8. Any other duties as directed by the Director, Communications and Publications.

Selection Criteria:

  1. High level of competence and experience in writing, editing and publishing – print and electronic.
  2. Demonstrated ability to research, write and edit material for publication and display, in variety of forms and the ability to achieve a high-level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  3. Strong project management skills including proven ability to maintain publishing schedules, manage multiple projects within budget and fixed deadlines, and work effectively with contract and in-house writers, designers and printers.
  4. Excellent interpersonal skills, outstanding written communication skills and high-level oral communication, liaison and negotiation skills.
  5. Proven capacity to work effectively (both independently and cooperatively) in a team of multi-skilled communication professionals.
  6. Strong understanding of Chinese current affairs and China business issues as they relate to American business; and understanding of U.S.-China relations and policy issues.
  7. Must show initiative, enthusiasm, flexibility, resourcefulness and capacity to think creatively.
  8. Willingness to contribute to the work of the team and the Chamber and work under pressure in an organized way to meet deadlines.
  9. Native English speaker is essential; Chinese language ability would be a plus.
  10. Degree in business, economics, communications, journalism or relevant discipline. Relevant work experience in a publishing environment.
  11. Advanced skills in design software packages, specifically: InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat would be highly regarded.
