Magazines

Duzhe

Duzhe ("reader") is a general interest digest magazine and has the highest monthly circulation of any Chinese periodical.

Founded in 1981, it went by the name "Reader's Digest" (读者文摘) until it was forced to drop the name in 1993 following a protracted legal battle with the American publisher of Reader's Digest (which now publishes on the mainland under the name Puzhi).

The content includes original articles, joke collections, short stories, and witty quotations. Much of the content is suggested by readers, who are then compensated for their recommendations. In addition to the flagship title, the Duzhe Group publishes editions for the countryside, the blind, Uighurs, and traditional character readers. There's also a supplement that exclusively publishes first-run, original compositions rather than excerpts from other magazines.

In April, 2006, a record 10.03 million copies of Duzhe were distributed (Xinhua article). The publisher aims to make that the monthly average by the end of 2008.
