Self's China edition was launched in March 2007 by Condé Nast China in a partnership with the All-China Women's Federation-affiliated Women of China magazine agency.

The magazine took over the registration of the former World Woman magazine (世界妇女博览) and is geared toward the same readership, with the extra benefit of having the cachet of an internationally-recognized name.
