Beijing Daily Messenger

Currently "Beijing's sole subway newspaper," as the nameplate reads. Beijing Daily Messenger first came to life as Star Daily, an entertainment-oriented newspaper run by the Beijing Daily Group, and its website and Chinese name still reflect those origins.

It grew into a fairly successful general-interest commercial daily before an abrupt overhaul in July, 2007, got rid of most of the hard news departments and let go hundreds of journalists.

For a short time thereafter, the paper returned to its entertainment reporting roots. Then, in November, 2007, it announced a relaunch as a Beijing's first "subway newspaper," similar to free papers in Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Nanjing.
