MIIT

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) is a newly-enlarged government division formed in 2008 from the Ministry of Information Industry (MII) and the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, the State Council Informatization Office, and the State Tobacco Monopoly Bureau. MII was itself formed in 1998 through the integration of the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications and the Ministry of Electronics Industry.

The agency's primary tasks include the regulation of Chinese telecommunications and software companies. Chinese websites are required to register with MIIT to allow users to report improper content.
