This Hong Kong-based Mandarin Chinese television broadcaster is allowed to air its news on the mainland.
On good terms with the government, it is one of the few non-government related television broadcasters in mainland China. It has a reputation for covering events and perspectives not shown on TV (although it's still subject to the broadcast censors), but what really distinguishes Phoenix's programming is its western newsroom atmosphere. In contrast to the staid, monotone CCTV newsreaders, Phoenix's anchors are young and personable.
Phoenix has 5 channels, but it's mostly the main channel and the news channel that are carried by mainland cable TV providers.
