Deaths in the news today

Two new items about deaths were the most common leading headlines of today's Beijing newspapers:

Two Chinese shot dead in robbery in South Africa
Two Chinese men working in South Africa were shot dead in an armed robbery on Sunday near Bloemfontein, according to the Chinese consulate general in Johannesburg and a friend of the victims. Since January this year, at least 12 Chinese have been murdered and another eight injured in robberies across South Africa, with economic losses surpassing 900,000 US dollars, according to a Johannesburg-based Chinese community security center.

Two die while running Beijing marathon
Two runners, a college student and a retiree, collapsed during Sunday's Beijing international marathon and died after being rushed to nearby hospitals.

Other Beijing news:

- Beijing to vote on new traffic law
Beijing traffic laws will be voted on in a meeting of the Standing Committee of the Municipal People's Congress on Friday. The proposal to make motorists take full responsibility for accidents led to more rows between drivers and pedestrians.

- QQ cannot be logged in for hours
Next time when you cannot log in your email account or any online chat tools like OICQ (QQ), call Beijing Daily Messenger. They put this news on their front page, and apparently paid a reader 100 yuan for reporting the news.

The photo on the front page of Beijing Daily Messenger above shows doctors conducting emergency treatment on a runner in the Beijing International Marathon, October 17, 2004.
