Sichuan Association for Science and Technology Makes Preliminary Decision Regarding the Director IncidentSFWOn March 21, 2010, the staff of Science Fiction World issued an open letter expressing opinions about agency director Comrade Li Chang and requesting that supervisory departments conduct an investigation and replace the director. At 9:40 am on April 1, the Science Fiction World agency held a meeting of the leadership during which Li Dayong, the vice party secretary, director of human resources, and commissioner of discipline and inspection at the Sichuan Association for Science and Technology, announced the decision of the SAST's party members group: 1. Li Chang is suspended from his positions as director and editor-in-chief, and day-to-day agency operations are turned over to vice-director Liu Chengshu. Comrade Li Chang will cooperate with handling any remaining publication license issues. 2. It is hoped that the agency staff will look at the big picture to guarantee that the magazines will come out on time so as not to disappoint readers. 3. The next step is to investigate and verify each of the issues brought up. During this affair, readers and SF fans have given us an immense amount of support and assistance, and the media has given the situation its reporting and attention. Thanks to everyone for your support and encouragement. You are the strongest defenders of Science Fiction World. Thank you. Now, the focus of Science Fiction World will turn back to the normal operation of the magazine. We will work hard to bring the magazine to the next level. All websites will resume normal updates. Once again, thank you all. |

+ Korean history doesn't fly on Chinese TV screens (2007.09): SARFT puts the kibbosh on Korean historical dramas. + Religion and government in an uneasy mix (2008.03): Phoenix Weekly (凤凰周刊) article from October, 2007, on government influence on religious practice in Tibet. + David Moser on Mao impersonators (2004.10): I first became aware of this phenomenon in 1992 when I turned on a Beijing TV variety show and was jolted by the sight of "Mao Zedong" and "Zhou Enlai" playing a game of ping pong. They both gave short, rousing speeches, and then were reverently interviewed by the emcee, who thanked them profusely for taking time off from their governmental duties to appear on the show.
