Disappearing ShanghaiPosted by Jeremy Goldkorn, July 24, 2006 1:51 PM
Shu Haolun is a documentary fimmaker from Shanghai. His family has an old house in Da Zhongli, one of Shanghai's oldest neighborhoods. The family has lived there for three generations. When he heard the news that the neighborhood faced "urban reconstruction", he decided to go back there with his video camera. He made a film called Nostalgia that contrasts his memories of growing up in the old neighborhood with the gleaming new face of Shanghai represented by the skyscrapers that are increasingly taking the place of old neigborhoods. Shu has a blog about the film, where you can find links to Chinese and internatinal media reports about the film, and contact methods if you would like to see the whole film. Below is a trailer for the film on Youtube: |
